Greek Islands Greece – A dream place to visit

The Greek Islands are a diverse collection of over 6000 isles and islets predominantly in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey, the Libyan Sea off the southern shores of Crete and the Ionian Sea off the west coast of mainland Greece. The overwhelming majority of the islands are claimed by Greece. It’s easiest to start in the Aegean, working north to south travelling down the eastern side of the Greek mainland, then east to west and then finally north again travelling up the western side of the Greek mainland.

In the North Aegean Sea, toward the Sea of Marmara are the North East Aegean Islands. Over to the west, closer to the mainland of Greece are the Sporades (sometimes referred to as the North Sporades) and the island of Euboea. Euboea is the second biggest of the Greek islands and is linked to the mainland by two bridges. Continuing Southward, the next group is the Cyclades – more or less in the centre of the Aegean. To the west of the Cylades, close to the mainland coast between Attica, Argolis and Peloponnesus, in the waters of the Saronic Gulf, lay the Saronic Islands (also referred to as the Argo-Saronic Islands). To the west and south of the Cyclades, closer to the coast of Turkey lie the Dodecanese Islands. The Dodecanese used to contain the group referred to as the South Saronic Islands but nowadays they are all referred to as the Dodecanese. To the west of the Dodecanese lies the island of Crete. Crete is the biggest of the Greek islands and is surrounded by many small islands collectively referred to as the islands of Crete.
The main island of Crete separates the Aegean Sea from the Libyan Sea so some of the Cretan islands are in the Aegean Sea (north of Crete) and some of them are in the Libyan Sea (south of Crete). To the west of Crete extending northward up the west coast of Greece lies the Ionian Sea. The Ionian Sea contains the remaining group of islands – the Ionian Islands. So by this brief summary and perhaps with the aid of a map, you should know approximately what someone is talking about when they say “the Saronic Islands” or “the Ionian Islands”.

Travel to the Greek Islands can be by air to Athens, Aktion, or any of the larger Greek islands such as Santorini, Kos, Rhodes, Crete, Zante and Corfu and then on by charter flight or more likely by ferry or boat to your destination.
